Question About My Doctor and Pain Specialists?

Question by wouldnt u like 2 know: question about my doctor and pain specialists?
[rewrite]I have been with the same doctor for over a year now, I started going to her because my back has hurt me for several years. about 4 months into seeing her she started prescribing me pain medications. I had to go get X-rays, MRI’s, Cat scans and even a myleogram. she had referred me to a neurosurgeon because I have a herniated disc that is pressing on a nerve in my back, causing severe pain in my lower back & down into my legs. the neruosurgeon said there is nothing that can be done with surgery because its not severe enough. now my doctor wants to take me off my pain medication and refer me to a pain specialist. I dont know why she wants to take me off the pain medication because its the only thing that helps me get around better without me being in so much pain. I dont know anything about a pain specialist, what all do they do? do they prescribe pain medication? should I look for another family doctor? I try to tell my doctor what is wrong with me and I feel like she doesnt listen to a word I say. she acts like all people do is mis-use pain medication, I dont misuse my medication at all, i take it as directed and everything. I know once I go off the pain medication my back will start hurting really bad all over again, it hurts to stand for too long, sit for too long, lay in certain positions. I dont know what to do, i feel like she’s treating me like I’m just another junkie looking for a high. the neurosurgeon knows whats wrong with my back and he agrees that i must be in pain, but he said he has no reason to treat me because i dont need surgery. every since he said that my family doctor wants to take me off the medication when i have proof that my back is messed up, she even has copies of all the tests I’ve been through! I’ve been to chiropractors, I’ve had physical therapy and both of them have made my back feel worse, I could barely walk out of physical therapy because my back was hurting so badly and I was in tears from the pain. she is aware of all of this, yet she wont listen. could someone please give me advice? what would you do? no rude comments please! thanks 🙂

Doctor Refused to Prescribe My Father Pain Meds Because He Smokes Pot?

Question by hannah: Doctor refused to prescribe my father pain meds because he smokes pot?
[rewrite]My father has split discs in his back along with severe arthritis. He walks bent over half the time because he is in so much pain. That being said, he is also an alcoholic and has been to rehab a few times throughout his life for alcohol and drug abuse. He does double or sometimes even triple his prescription. He says it’s because he needs more to get through the pain. I don’t want to say he’s not in a severe amount of pain every day, because I know he is – but I also know that he likes getting high too. So anyway he went to a new doctor a few weeks ago and was honest and said that he smokes pot once or twice a week – and she was very judgmental about it, sort of rightfully so since he has issues with addiction. He went back today per her request and she told him that she would not prescribe him any pain medication because he smokes marijuana. I do understand where she is coming from – she thinks he is abusing the drugs, which he does sometimes. My question is what can he do? It is a double edged sword because he is an addict but also does suffer from excruciating pain daily.. I am 21 years old and just don’t want to see my 52 year old father in so much pain. We live in NY. I dont know if there are any non addictive pain medications or … maybe some kind of physical therapy or …. ?????
He is on medicaid – there are only certain doctors he can go to – and this is his 2nd doctor. His other doctor refused further treatment because my dad couldn’t afford his copays. He is on disability.
slipped discs** not split, oops.
MellowTones – thanks – yes, my dad could be lying to me – but I did research a little and there are a lot of people who say they are going through the same thing – their doctors stop prescribing them pain meds because they admit to smoking pot. I would completely understand if the doctor stopped treatment because they feared he was abusing the pain meds – but it just baffles me (if it’s true) that a doctor would actually stop prescribing pain medication because the patient smokes marijuana. Surely and legitimate doctor realizes that marijuana is pretty much medically harmless…. and actually is beneficial for his pain.

With the wide variety of treatment modalities it is difficult to tell you what is “average.” So here goes nothing.

Question by Lucy: Drug Rehab Facilities in Las Vegas?
[rewrite]Does anyone know of an in patient drug rehab facility in Las Vegas that offers free services or low cost services for non insured patients. My sister is a drug addict and my parents are in need of obtaining medical care but do not have any money. I’ve heard there might be some Christian facilies that offer low cost services.
